Eyelids (Blepharoplasty) in Houston
As men get older, their facial skin begins to lose its young, taut look as gravity and the effects of excess exposure to the harmful rays of the sun, genetics, and environmental pollution take their toll on our skin. This loss of elasticity can cause one's eyes to appear loose and baggy. Vision may become impaired as excess skin on the eyelids cause the eye to droop. Men that have professions that require prolonged exposure to the sun are especially vulnerable to acceleration of the aging process.
At The Freeman Center for Plastic Surgery in The Woodlands we have spent the last 25 years studying the effects of aging on the face for men and have developed many advanced noninvasive techniques for slowing and even reversing the signs of aging of the face. Under the direction of experienced board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Freeman we can help you look years younger and erase some of the damage that time, genetics, and the environment have done utilizing the latest eyelid procedures.
Eyelid Facts
Eyelid surgery for men is done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The process is relatively noninvasive and patients typically see a full recovery after a few weeks. During a Blepharoplasty procedure, incisions are made where the natural crease should be in the upper lids and below the lash line in the lower lids. This helps mask scarring that may result from the procedure. After the incisions have been made, excess fat and skin are removed. Eyelid surgery will not remove or eliminate all wrinkle lines. They will, however, soften wrinkle lines.
If only excess fat is present in the lower lids, it may be removed through an incision inside the lower lids with no external incision or scar (transconjunctival blepharoplasty).
The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. Patients should realize that all surgical procedures have some degree of risk and minor complications that do not affect the outcome. Major complications resulting from this type of surgery are rare.
Eyelids (Blepharoplasty) Recuperation and Healing
Typically, after an eyelid rejuvenation procedure, all sutures are removed within 7-10 days. Patients will commonly experience some initial mild discomfort, which can easily be controlled through oral medication. Post-operative bruising, swelling, and sensitivity to light will last for at least a week or two. Patients are asked to wear sun protection (sunglasses and sunscreen) for several weeks after the procedure.
Contact lenses can be worn when comfortable (usually within 3-7 days).
Additional Options to Consider With Your Eyelids (Blepharoplasty)
There are additional procedures that can enhance the results of eyelid surgery. These include forehead lift, face lift, chemical peel or laser skin resurfacing. Men may also want to consider lower eyelid lifts if they are unhappy with the excess skin present underneath their eyes.
Insurance Guidelines Eyelids (Blepharoplasty)
Most insurance providers do not include cosmetic operations such as eyelid surgery in their plans. Occasionally, if surgery is being done to improve the field of vision, insurance may cover upper lid surgery. Otherwise, these procedures are considered cosmetic and the patient is responsible for payment.
