ears (Otoplasty)
It is not uncommon for a child to be born with ear deformities. Many times, the parents or even the child will decide that an Otoplasty or ear pinning procedure is the best option for generating a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Otoplasties are more common among children since they are more likely to succumb to generational teasing, but people of all ages opt to undergo ear pinning.
Ear Pinning (Otoplasty) Facts
This surgery is intended for patients who are displeased with their natural ear shape. Typically, patients with ears that stick out too far from the side of the head and those with ears of an unusual or undesirable shape will undergo ear pinning. After the operation, the ears should have normal folds and shape with normal protrusion from the side of the head.
During an ear pinning surgery, the doctor will utilize one of the following two techniques to achieve a more streamlined look in the ear area.
- Make a small cut in the back of the ear, exposing the cartilage, bend it back or cut part of it away, and stitch the ear into place.
- Make a small cut in the back of the ear, remove some skin, and fold the cartilage back on itself and stitch into place.
The procedure is appropriate beginning around age 5 or 6 or at any time thereafter. Children under these ages are recommended against Otoplasty, because their ears have not yet fully developed.
Ear Pinning (Otoplasty) Recuperation and Healing
Otoplasty is a slightly invasive procedure that requires either local or general anesthesia. The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis in a hospital or the doctor's office. On occasion, the doctor may recommend that the patient spend one night in the hospital after the procedure has been carried out.
The procedure generally takes about two or three hours to complete. After the operation, the ears are usually bandaged with a dressing that wraps around the head in a turban-like fashion. The patient leaves this covering on for several days. Patients should expect to feel some initial mild postoperative discomfort after the surgery. Pain is easily controlled with oral medication. Usually, a thin stocking cap or head band is worn at night for three weeks after the first dressing is removed to protect the ears. Patients will usually have to wait for about 10-20 days before their ears will look "normal" again. Patients should avoid contact sports for about a month following surgery.
The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. Please note that all surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome will occasionally occur, and major complications are unusual.
