Breast implant replacement

If you have undergone a breast enhancement procedure, you may need or want to have your implants replaced at some point following the initial procedure. By consulting with your plastic surgeon, you can determine if and when breast implant replacement surgery is a good idea.
The primary intent of a breast implant replacement procedure is to remove older implants and replace them with new implants. Additionally, however, you may opt to have capsules (scar tissue) and residual silicone removed during the procedure.

Breast Implant Facts

Breast implant replacement procedures can vary based upon what specifically takes place during a given procedure. If only the prostheses are being replaced, the operation can be performed using local anesthesia, sedation and local anesthesia or general anesthesia. If the procedure additionally includes a removal of the capsules or scar tissue around the prostheses, sedation or general anesthesia is usually necessary.
In almost all implant replacement surgery, the original scar will be used again so that additional and unnecessary scarring will not take place.
All surgical procedures carry certain risks with them. The specific risks you face during a breast implant replacement procedure, however, cannot be fully known until a consultation takes place. While major complications are rare with these surgical procedures, minor complications can take place occasionally that do not affect the outcome of the procedure.

Breast Implant Recuperation and Healing

Depending on the amount or work being done during a breast implant replacement procedure, the recuperation period will differ. If implants are simply being replaced with new implants, the pain and recovery period will be minimal. If implants and scar tissue are removed, the discomfort and recovery will be similar to that of the original breast enhancement procedure.
After the surgery, you will be able to go home in an elastic bra and any initial discomfort following the procedure can be treated with oral medication. Approximately 7-12 days after the procedure, the sutures will be removed. You can begin light activities as soon as you feel ready for them, and can typically start aerobic activities after about three weeks.

Breast Implant and Other Surgical Options

In addition to an implant replacement procedure, you may choose to undergo a Mastopexy or breast lift, to additionally enhance results.

Insurance Guidelines

If your implants need to be removed because of symptoms, implant rupture or deformity, it is possible that your insurance will cover the replacement procedure. Our dedicated staff will work with you to make the necessary pre-authorization inquiries.
