Male Breast Reduction
Genetics, excessive mammary glands, weight gain or quick weight loss can often leave men with excessive unwanted breast tissue. This condition is known as Gynecomastia. Some men find it embarrassing to have oversized breasts and shy away from appearing in public without a shirt. If you are concerned about the appearance of oversized breasts and would like to restore your body to a more masculine profile, male breast reduction surgery may be the answer.
Male Breast Reduction Facts
Male breast reduction surgery can be performed in a number of different ways. Typically, the procedure is done through liposuction, excision or a combination of the two. Excision can also be used to remove unwanted skin that many men have after quick weight loss.
All of the above mentioned procedures are done on an outpatient basis and are conducted with the patient under general anesthesia. However, these procedures can be performed with sedation and local anesthesia.
All medical procedures bring with them some degree of risk. Your surgeon will examine your medical history and health carefully and will be able to determine what risks you particularly might face with this type of procedure. While minor complications do occasionally occur with male breast reduction surgery, major complications are very rare.
Male Breast Reduction Recuperation & Healing
Every person is different and so the recovery process will likely differ from person to person. However, most patients can return home after a few hours to be cared for by family or friends. A compressive wrap is placed around the treated area to minimize swelling and will be left on for a week or two after the procedure. Typically, 7-10 days after the surgery, sutures can be removed.
Male Breast Reduction And Other Surgical Options
While a procedure to reduce the size of the male breast has the potential to alter the shape and size of your breasts, it will not correct other plastic surgery concerns such as excess fat deposits or skin that is abnormally loose. Patients desiring more dramatic changes to the body and face may want to consider a Tummy Tuck, Microfat Grafting (Chin Implant) and Laser Skin Resurfacing,Cosmetic Fillers, Liposuction of the Neck, Eyelid Surgery, Brow lift, or a Face lift procedure.Insurance Guidelines
Male Breast Reduction Surgery is considered to be a cosmetic procedure by many insurance companies, and as such, is not covered under the policy. If your insurance company considers this treatment to be cosmetic, you will be responsible for covering the cost in full. It is suggested that you check with your insurance company about their policies regarding cosmetic procedures.
